They will actually steal pictures from legitimate car listings online! Since they don’t have a vehicle, they up and disappear after you send payment. Another scam that focuses on buying used cars online is the car shipping scam. To stop you from realizing immediately that they don’t actually have a car for sale, they arrange to have the vehicle transported to your home. When this happens, most buyers don’t catch on until the so-called seller is long gone with your money.
DON’T forget that buying a car online (if you pay for it online or not) is just like buying a car locally. If you are doing a legitimate long distance transaction, still gather information through quick research online. For instance, you can look at pictures closely, check the Kelley Blue Book website to get an estimated value, check to see if the vehicle has been the subject of an auto recall, and so forth.
