In a perfect world, everyone trying to sell a used car would be 100% honest, but this isn’t a perfect world. I mean do you really expect a used car seller to be all “you are looking at a piece of junk that is going to cost you thousands of dollars in repairs alone over the next two years?” As much as we would love this honesty, it isn’t going to happen. This does complicate your car buying, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself from sellers who lie. Keep reading on for some helpful car buying tips.
Car Buying Tip #1 - Know That People Lie
Don’t go all overboard and be over-the-top paranoid that every used car seller you come across is an outright liar, but it is important to know these people do exist. Regardless of how “nice” a person seems, they will likely stretch the truth a little bit if it gets their car sold. Be cautious of these people, but really be cautious of those who outright tell large lies that can impact your car buying decisions.
Car Buying Tip #2 - Gather Information About the Car Ahead of Time
Visiting a used car dealership on a whim is nice, but it doesn’t give you much time to do research. Most dealers do have a website setup where you can view the basics about their for sale cars. As for buying for sale by owner cars, gather information online first. Try the Car Finder where you can search thousands of car sites, classified sites, and more at once. Since you can see full for sale listings online, you can get the basic information like a car’s make, model, year, mileage, and so forth.
Car Buying Tip #3 - Research the Make, Model, and Year
This past year or so, we have been plagued with new car recalls. While it seems that recalls are relatively new, they have been happening for years and basically were able to fly under the radar. What this means is that recalls must play into your car buying techniques. Do a search online with the make, model, and year you want to buy. See if the used car was the subject of a recall. This enables you to outright ask the seller if the recall issue was fixed.
Car Buying Tip #4 - Test Drive the Vehicle
There are risks to actually buying used cars online; you always take a gamble. If possible, focus most of your attention on local cars. You can test drive and inspect all cars. This is your best chance to see if the seller is being honest or not. See how the car looks, feels, and drives. Test driving is also recommended as part of any car buying plan because it gives you a good idea of any immediate expenses, such as when new brakes are needed.
Car Buying Tip #5 - Check Estimated Values
If you haven’t visited the Kelley Blue Book website before, do it now. This website is a great car buying tool. Plug in information about a car to get its estimated value. Aim for paying less than this recommended amount, but never pay more. It can also be used to protect yourself from car sellers who lie. So lets say a seller says the car is in excellent shape. Do a value check on the car with that so-called excellent condition. But then do a value check for the same car in good or poor condition. This enables you to automatically come back with a better figure if you ever catch a seller in a lie. Of course, you can also just walk away too if you want.
